London-Two time Juno award nominee, and NDP MP Charlie Angus (Timmins-James Bay) is no stranger to whirlwind schedules. As a musician, as the NDP Critic for both Culture and Public Works, and as the representative for a riding the size of Great Britain, Angus is use to long days and dealing with a variety of issues on the fly. NDP leader Jack Layton (MP, Toronto-Danforth), joined NDP MP Irene Mathyssen (London-Fanshawe) in London for a special visit to the John Labatt Centre for the NHL Oldtimers Hockey Challenge. The annual event, has former NHL players facing off against members of the local police force in a charity hockey game. In the afternoon, Layton laced up the skates for a free pre-game skate was held at the John Labatt Centre, where he and the NHLers took to the ice with Londoners of all ages.

Forest-MP Irene Mathyssen (NDP, London-Fanshawe) joined with community leaders and executives from Bullfrog Power on Wednesday afternoon (Jan 23) to officially open a new 6 turbine wind farm north of London. Located just outside of Forest, the "Ravenswood" wind farm is Bullfrog's newest green electricity project. The project will provide enough green power to meet the needs of 3000 households. Read more»

OTTAWA – On the eve of the 20th anniversary of the negotiations of the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement, NDP International Trade Critic Peter Julian (Burnaby-New Westminster) presented his analysis of the new figures from Statistics Canada that show a drastic increase in income inequality for most Canadian families since 1989. Time for fairness for customers as banks enjoy record profits.
TORONTO – Average Canadians are getting “nickeled and dimed” by the big chartered banks says NDP Leader Jack Layton and the Conservative government has the power to make the cash-machine-money-grab disappear.
“The NDP thinks hard working Canadians should not be charged by banks when they deposit, withdraw or transfer their own money using an ATM,” said Layton. “The NDP will table amendments to the Bank Act that would eliminate fees for using ATMs.” Read more»

OTTAWA—Canada is falling behind many other nations in a wide range of social and economic areas, and tax cuts are the culprit.
The study comparing high-tax Nordic countries and low-tax Anglo-American countries on 50 social and economic measures and finds the high-tax Nordic countries score better in 42 categories.
According to the study, tax cuts are disastrous for the well-being of a nation’s citizens.
