Left Unsaid--Peter Ferguson

Welcome to my posting, and welcome to a new year. Like many of you I have mixed feelings about 2009. For me it had its highs and lows personally, but I can’t help thinking about the many innocent Canadians hurt by the irresponsible speculative bubble that finally burst. Read more»

Local Area Letters: My MP is Still Hard at Work

Just a note to let everyone know that with the suspension of Parliament, my MP, Irene Mathyssen, is still hard at work.

Recently I wrote Mathyssen asking her for help in regards to an EI claim that seemed to never get approval. Within an hour, I recieved both an e-mail and a followup phone call from her office. I also recieved a phone call on the exact day Mathyssen's office had told me they would have some sort of answer. Read more»

MP Mathyssen's Response to the Prorogation of Parliament

For a second consecutive January the doors of the House of Commons are closed and Canadians are again denied a voice in our parliament. The recent decision of Prime Minister Harper to prorogue parliament is disturbing enough on its own. This prorogation not only stops the work of parliament, but also derails more than 30 pieces of the government’s own legislation, including several justice and consumer protection bills. All of this legislation, declared essential by the Conservatives, will now have to start again from scratch, wasting not only the time and energy of the many MPs, committees, and committee witnesses, but also the tax dollars spent in the preparation of this legislation. New Democrats: putting you and family first in difficult times

The past 12 months have been tough for most – yet time after time the Harper Conservatives have missed their opportunity to help. They’ve been looking after their political and business friends. They’ve been working with provincial governments to increase your taxes. And they’ve stacked the Senate and other government jobs with their Conservative friends … like they said they wouldn’t. Local Area Letters: Holding the Liberals to Account Over the HST!

A Constituent response to an email from Deb Matthews, MPP for London-North-Centre

Hi Deb,

I appreciate your response and I know you are more or less forced to support whatever comes down "from your party leader". I understand what McGuinty is doing in order to appease a few coffee drinkers (according to your exempted products). When it comes right down to it, people of this province still perceive it as a money grab Read more»

New Democrats to CRTC: End Cable War "Circus"

OTTAWA – New Democrats say Canadians are fed up with the ongoing media war between the cable giants and the broadcasters. Speaking in the House today, New Democrat MP Charlie Angus (Timmins-James Bay) said the stand-off has diverted attention from the basic obligation of both the cable companies and broadcasters to invest in local television and Canadian drama. Angus says the federal government must send a clear signal that it will restore balance to the television-cable system.

“On the one hand you have an industry that made $2.1 billion in profits pretending to be the friend of the little guy. Meanwhile they jack up cable rates year after year. Read more»
