Statement from MP Irene Mathyssen on International Women's Day

Women and men around the world recognize International Women's Day as a time to reflect upon and celebrate women’s social, political and economic achievements, both globally and locally. In this country, much progress has been made since Canadians first marked International Women’s Day in 1977.

It was a pleasure to join women in my home community of London, Ontario this weekend for a number of events celebrating International Women’s Day. I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who organized activities at the Masonville Library, the Hamilton Rd. Seniors Centre, and the South London Neighbourhood Resource Centre. Thank you to everyone who attended the Friday breakfast in support of the London Abused Women’s Centre. Read more»

Conservative's Corporate Welfare Budget Fails Everyday Londoners

LONDON –Despite thousands of job losses in the past year, and tens of thousands of families struggling to make ends meet, the federal budget fails to provide any substantial help to everyday Canadians says MP Irene Mathyssen (London-Fanshawe, NDP)

“We cannot pretend the recession is over and all the problems have gone away. Thousands of London workers are still out of work, 1.5 million workers across Canada, and the prospect of finding permanent work any time in the immediate future is not good. We have 1.7 million seniors struggling to make ends meet on meager pension benefits which are $4000 a year below the poverty line. What does the Finance Minister deliver in the budget? More corporate welfare! Read more»

Ontario NDP's Horwath: Liberals Hurting Hospitals

Regarding the article Cancer clinic mulls 20% cut in nurses (London Free Press, Feb. 10).

London Health Sciences Centre is not the only Ontario hospital to announce drastic cuts. The budget guessing game the McGuinty Liberals are forcing Ontario hospitals to play is unconscionable at worst, irresponsible at best. Read more»

Needed: Healthy Canadians - with healthy pensions

by Peter Ferguson

In spite of the current worldwide recession, Canada is indeed a fortunate country. We are among the most prosperous in the world and Canadians rate high on longevity. However, it is always possible to do better and to do more. Our prosperity is very unequally distributed and too many Canadians live in poverty. Aside from the important issue of fairness, this has huge implications on the overall health of Canadians and the continued prosperity of our nation. Read more»

Local Area Letters: Conservatives Buy American Deal Does More Harm

In response to Fred Rinne's editorial Buy American deal gets us back on track (Feb. 8).

We would suggest the Harper government has snuck a deal through that will do more harm than good for Canadian workers in the long term.

This deal fails to protect Canadian interests, it gives up more than it gets and trades off long-term opportunities for possible short-term gains. Read more»
