Forest-MP Irene Mathyssen (NDP, London-Fanshawe) joined with community leaders and executives from Bullfrog Power on Wednesday afternoon (Jan 23) to officially open a new 6 turbine wind farm north of London. Located just outside of Forest, the "Ravenswood" wind farm is Bullfrog's newest green electricity project. The project will provide enough green power to meet the needs of 3000 households.

"I'm delighted that Bullfrog invited me to be part of today's event." said Mathyssen. "The combination of wind, solar, hydro and geothermal energy represents the real energy future for Ontario and Canada." Mathyssen was the first MP in Ontario to utilize Bullfrog Power, switching both her London office and her Ottawa apartment to the green energy provider. The federal NDP office is also utilizing Bullfrog Power, and using recycled and recyclable products for the production of flyers and mailings. "I believe both the federal and provincial levels of government have a critical role to play in ensuring the security and sustainability of our energy supply in Canada. To date, neither has demonstrated real leadership on this issue." said Mathyssen. "We have a federal government that is brokering the so called "Security and Prosperity Partnership" (SPP) with the Bush Administration which would sell out our energy sovereignty to US corporations. The Ontario government is recklessly pursuing $40 billion in spending on new nuclear power plants, which is not only expensive but brings with it additional security and safety concerns--let alone a legacy of radioactive waste for future generations to deal with. I reject both of these ill-conceived directions. Instead, I am trying to lead by example by utilizing sustainable, environmentally friendly energy alternatives whenever possible."
On February 8th, Mathyssen is hosting a public forum on the SPP at the Wolf Performance Hall at the Central Library in downtown London. Working in cooperation with Bullfrog and the Council of Canadians, Mathyssen has arranged for the public forum to also be bullfrog powered.
